    Larry Cohen will spend some time informing us about other search engines and better ways to search. This will be followed by member supported show and tell. Please email any board member is you are planning to present something.

           Subject: "Star Gazing On Your PC"
    The meeting will start off with our Computer Q&A where anyone in attendance asks questions and we all help solve problems and gain information.

    Following the Q&A, ICON’s own Charlie Wagner will present a session on the dazzling array of free astronomy resources available on the Internet (Microsoft’s World Wide Telescope, the Hubble Space Telescope site and more) and for your PC by demonstrating freeware (Stellarium, Celestia, Cartes du Ciel…). Most of these applications and resources are intended for the novice observer, so don’t feel intimidated if you don’t know the difference between a refractor telescope and a reflector; you’re bound to come away with something at this meeting that will enhance your appreciation of the wonders of the night sky.

    Join us IN THE LIBRARY'S AUDITORIUM, on the left after you enter the Main Entrance, for our next meeting.

    Following the Q&A, ICON members Joe Suda and Amy Cott discussed LINUX, the freeware alternative to the Big Two operating systems (Windows and Leopard) in terms that the complete Linux-neophyte could understand.

    Following the Q&A, Steve Lindsay, of Microsoft, presented a live sneak preview of the latest version of Windows, Windows 7, seven weeks prior to its release in October.

    Following the Q&A, Andy Gilbert of P.C. Richard & Son, gave a presentation "Back to School Tech" about the latest in computers and technology. He included information and a sneak peek at Windows 7, the Intel Atom processor use in netbooks, and the latest in comsumer printer technologies.

    Following the Q&A, Cole Bulas gave a presentation on behalf of Sandhills Publishing. The presentation, informed attendees about Sandhills Publishing’s magazines and the Smart Computing User Group Program, including details about the contents of an issue of Smart Computing, SmartComputing.co, and and introduction to Smart Computing’s sister publications - PC Today, First Glimpse, Reference Series, and Computer Power User. Cole also shared how subscriptions come with unlimited computer support from Smart Computing.

    Following the Q&A, Bernie & Shep Gorman returned for another of their humorous and informative presentations about using computers to record and edit digital audio and video. They included free or nearly free software that can be used easily and effectively. Members received a CD with the software and information.

    ICON members Larry Cohen, Charlie Wagner and Ira Brickman presented their choices for the newest type of Web sites - those that offer free services and applications that require little or no installation and replace costly software. Uses include reference materials, document conversion, full TV episodes, screen capture and much more.

    ICON conducted its first Webinar. Gene Barlow appeared on-screen from Utah and discussed the ins and outs of Acronis True Image - hard drive backup software that images drives and partitions. Gene discussed how to organize backups and how to access individual files contained in a backup image file.

    Brice Washington, of Hauppauge Computer Works, described his company's video capture hardware and answered questions about using a computer with HD broadcast and cable sources.

    Andy Gilbert, of PC Richard & Son, presented what you need for Back to School including how to choose a notebook computer, what is new in printers, & hot back to school values.


July 11, 2008, Meeting Report
    The meeting started off with our Computer Q&A where anyone in attendance asked questions and we all helped solve problems and gain information.

    Steve Lindsay of Microsoft gave a live demonstration of key new features in Windows Vista, Windows Live (which comprises of a collection of online services such as Live Messenger, Maps, Mail, SkyDrive, Toolbar and Live Photo Gallery) and a variety of other applications and technologies including Windows Media Center and Windows Home Server.

    Steve Lindsay joined Microsoft in 2006 as a developer for the Forefront Server Security team in New York. As a Windows Champion, Steve has several popular blogs and community forums centered around digital lifestyle with Windows Vista, Live, Home Server and Media Center. His sites have had more than 60,000 unique hits in the last couple of months. Steve is technical enthusiast first and foremost and likes to share with the community the very features and tricks he finds and uses on a day to day basis.

    The meeting started off with our Computer Q&A where anyone in attendance asked questions and we all helped solve problems and gain information.

    Bernie Gorman returned to ICON with another of his informative and entertaining presentations, showing that anyone can produce and distribute video on a shoestring budget.

    He covered the basics of computer and TV video and will showed how some inexpensive (often free) software and low-cost hardware can be used both to produce original TV content and to edit existing media.

    Bernie gave to members a CD filled with freeware to use with media and video.


May 2, 2008, Meeting Report
    The meeting started off with our Computer Q&A where anyone in attendance asked questions and we all helped solve problems and gain information. This month there was extensive discussion about resolving problems with failed hard drive boot and hard drive failures.

    After the Q&A, Larry Cohen, Professor Emeritus from Nassau Community College, and ICON Board member, emceed his game of “Don’t You Wish You Knew That?”, where Larry asked the audience what to do to resolve a number of common and uncommon computer problems and annoyances.


April 4, 2008, Meeting Report
    The meeting started off with a presentation by ICON's own Charlie Wagner about April's Trenton Computer Festival. It was followed by a Computer Q&A where anyone in attendance asked questions and we all helped solve problems and gain information.

    After the Q&A, Pat Cavanagh, Connetquot Computer Lab Coordinator. presented “Seven of the Best,” covering seven programs that Pat has found to be consistently helpful in using PC computers. Most require no installation and will fit onto a USB pen drive, making them transportable for use on any computer.


March 7, 2008, Meeting Report
    The meeting began with a Computer Q&A. The Q&A was followed by several ICON members, with decades of combined experience combing the Internet, who presented "Web Sites We Like" a number of especially useful and unique Web sites. In addition to helpful computer sites, the range of resources is extensive from little-known video broadcasts to file conversions to home product reviews and more. These online resources are invaluable to use.

February 1, 2008, Meeting Report
    The meeting began with a 1/2 hour Computer Q&A. Later, ICON Secretary Laura Cummings demonstrated all of the cool, new online resources that Google is working to provide. She will discuss Google Desktop, IGoogle widgets, interactive mapping, using Google to see photos of where you drive, Google Documents, and other neat tidbits beta or otherwise. It looks as if Google is on the horizon of shaping our online future including the possibility of having a complete operating system on the Internet.

January 4, 2008, Meeting Report
    ICON member Tom Cott demonstrated using hardware to make computing easier, including special cables to transfer files between PC's and to temporarily connect devices to computers.
