The meeting featured Joe Schibani (aka "Joe Tek"), who demo'ed what is involved in building your own computer.

Joe made several points clear: He is an "AMD guy" who, in truth, recognizes the value and speed of many AMD CPU's. He used, and recommends, newegg.com as the low cost source for the computer's components. Joe's goal was to build a very current but low-cost computer. He chose a Celeron-D CPU on an ECS micro-ATX motherboard that included onboard video, audio and Ethernet, plus eight USB ports and Firewire.

By the end of the demo, Joe had a working computer, built for under $600, in a $35 case with a window to its interior (glowing in red and green) and a handle.

January 7th, 2005, Meeting Report
The meeting began with requests for help with the Web site and representing ICON at various upcoming computer shows. Randy Gilbert informed members about malware (spyware, adware, popupware, keyloggers, dialers, etc.) solutions (see our FAQ Page).

Richard Pierce presented an introduction to Amateur radio and the Internet, featuring ECHOLINK, a computer program that allows Amateur Radio stations to communicate with one another over the Internet. ECHOLINK uses Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. VoIP is the same technology used the new phone services offered by broadband providers like Cablevision and companies like Vonage.

ECHOLINK, however, can only be used by licensed amateur radio operators. Using ECHOLINK, Richard was able to connect to Ham operators as close as the street outside and as far as New Zealand. He also informed us about the January 9th "Ham Radio University and ARRL New York City/Long Island Section Convention" (and FCC Amateur Radio licensing exams) at Briarcliffe College.
